Origin of the Name Mahanay
There were various versions of the origin of the name of this island, but the committee on consolidation of these data chose only one. The readers may refer to the pamphlet on this island for the sake of inquiry. The word was derived from “mahinay”, meaning slow. Most of the inhabitants of this island are slow in many aspects, especially in educational development. There are very few inhabitants who have attended higher education. Majority of its settlers are poor although most of them earn their living by fishing and engaging in cottage industries.
